{"id":3937,"date":"2011-10-01T06:00:23","date_gmt":"2011-10-01T14:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/?p=3937"},"modified":"2011-09-03T01:03:09","modified_gmt":"2011-09-03T08:03:09","slug":"surname-saturday-dreffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/2011\/10\/01\/surname-saturday-dreffs\/","title":{"rendered":"Surname Saturday &#8211; Dreffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week we take a look at the lineage of the Dreffs surname as it pertains to my family&#8217;s history.\u00c2\u00a0 The Dreffs name has come to be synonymous with BRICK WALL for me.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4454\" style=\"width: 205px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/16_00004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4454\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4454\" title=\"Wedding Portrait for Mary and Walter Dreffs (November 1951)\" src=\"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/16_00004-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wedding Portrait for Mary and Walter Dreffs (November 1951)\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/16_00004-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/16_00004-97x150.jpg 97w, https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/16_00004.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wedding Portrait for Mary and Walter Dreffs (November 1951)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Earliest Known Ancestor<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>My great-grandfather Joseph Dreffs was born in March 1866 in Pozna\u00c5\u201e (Posen), Poland when it was under German occupation.\u00c2\u00a0 According to Joseph&#8217;s death certificate, his mother&#8217;s maiden name was <em>Grayeski<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Joseph married his wife Anna Kozminska in Poland in 1866.\u00c2\u00a0 He came to the United States and filed his Declaration of Intent on July 6, 1891.\u00c2\u00a0 (I&#8217;m still looking for his actual passenger record &#8211; it&#8217;s my biggest genealogical brick wall!)<\/p>\n<p>Joseph and Anna spent several years in Gaylord, Michigan which is where their eighth child, my grandfather Walter Anthony Dreffs, was born in 1900.\u00c2\u00a0 He moved the family to Saginaw around 1910 and lived there until the 1930&#8217;s when the family moved to Gilford in Tuscola County.\u00c2\u00a0 Joseph Dreffs died 20 Dec 1941 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Saginaw.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph and Anna had eleven children: Martin Dreffs (1887 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1976), Hattie (Ida) Dreffs (1888 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1960), the elusive <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/?p=4221\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vincent Joseph Dreffs<\/strong><\/a> (1892 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c ?), Jennie Dreffs (1892 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c ?), Veronica (Vera) Dreffs (1894 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1946), Mary C. Dreffs (1896 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1973), Francis Stanley Dreffs (1898 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1959), my grandfather Walter Anthony Dreffs (1900 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1958), Paul Anthony Dreffs (1902 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1980), Andrew S. Diane Marie Dreffs &gt; Walter Anthony Dreffs (1900 &#8211; 1958) &gt; Joseph Dreffs (1866 &#8211; 1941)<\/p>\n<p>If this tiny lineage isn&#8217;t indicative of a solid brick wall, I don&#8217;t know what else is.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been heavily researching this line for more than a decade.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, my grandfather Walter died when my mother was only six years old.\u00c2\u00a0 He was somewhat of a drifter, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jessicagreen.com\/wordpress\/?p=4188\" target=\"_blank\">a gambler and an alcoholic<\/a><\/strong>; he left no trace of his family history except what little bits I&#8217;ve been able to unearth that were documented in his vital records.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Items of Interest<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I wrote to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgsa.org\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Polish Genealogical Society of America<\/strong><\/a> and asked them to send me information on the Dreffs surname.\u00c2\u00a0 I received in response a single piece of paper with the following information:\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Drefs 8, ToNa: F. 1, PoSz: M. 1, F. 1, PomPo: M. 2, F. 2, SzmSz: M. 1&#8243;\u00c2\u00a0 They included no instructions, so I am assuming that means the Drefs family has a grand total of 8 family members in all of Poland.\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s probably why I am finding the research nearly impossible to conduct for this surname.\u00c2\u00a0 Looking on their website under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pgsa.org\/PDFs\/ListAbbrev.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dictionary of Surnames in Current Use in Poland<\/strong><\/a>, I see this surname is found in either Pozna\u00c5\u201e or Szczecin.\u00c2\u00a0 Given that the Naturalization papers for Joseph say he is from &#8220;Posen&#8221; I have to assume he came from the province of Pozna\u00c5\u201e.<\/li>\n<li>My grandfather Walter Anthony Dreffs is missing in action between 1925 when he is listed in the Saginaw City Directory and 1941 when his father&#8217;s obituary lists him as living in Saginaw.\u00c2\u00a0 I can&#8217;t find him at anywhere, including the 1930 US Census.\u00c2\u00a0 We believe he may have had another family somewhere during this time.<\/li>\n<li>Walter returned to Saginaw after his father&#8217;s death and began having children with my grandmother, Mary Rose (Stroik) Karpuk.\u00c2\u00a0 The couple had eight children together &#8211; two single births and three sets of twins.\u00c2\u00a0 Only six of their eight children survived.\u00c2\u00a0 The middle set of twins died at birth.\u00c2\u00a0 If you look at the wedding portrait for Mary and Walter you will notice that she is 8 months into her final pregnancy with my mother Diane and her twin brother, Daniel.\u00c2\u00a0 They had their first six children out of wedlock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Family Notes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Dreffs family has been my biggest brick wall throughout my first decade of genealogical research.<\/li>\n<li>I am desperately seeking Joseph Dreffs&#8217; passenger ship record.<\/li>\n<li>I am forever looking for Walter Anthony Dreffs in the 1930 US Census.\u00c2\u00a0 Did he have another family before he got together with my grandmother?\u00c2\u00a0 They knew each way back in the 1920&#8217;s but didn&#8217;t hook up until 1941.\u00c2\u00a0 I can&#8217;t WAIT for the 1940 Census to be released in April 2012.\u00c2\u00a0 Grandpa &#8211;
