RUTH PIPER

RUTH C. PIPER KNOX, IN Ruth C. Piper, age 84, of Knox, IN, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2007 in her home.  Mrs. Piper was born March 10, 1923 in Wheeler, IN to Charles and Ida (Weddel) [Weddle] Barkley and lived in the Knox area for 29 years, coming from Valparaiso, IN.  On April 14, 1951 in South Bend, IN, Ruth was married to Vernon Piper who preceded her in death in 1980.  She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.  Survivors include one daughter, Jennie Carter of Knox, IN; two granddaughters: Mikaela and Dawna Carter both of Knox, IN; and many nieces and nephews.  Ruth was a retired accountant with the McGill Corp. of Valparaiso.  She attended Eagle Creek Church of Knox and was active in the Ladies Aid.  She was also active in Starke County tourism, was interested in horses and crafts, and owned the Pied Piper Ceramic Shop.  Funeral services will be held Monday, October 29, 2007 and 2:00 p.m. Central Time at Eeagle Creek Church, Knox, IN.  Friends may visit on Sunday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Rannalls Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, and Monday at the church one hour prior to the funeral service.

On a more personal note, Ruth Piper was very active in Genealogy and contributed greatly to the research that got me started in the family history.  Her contributions to preserving our family’s story are priceless.

Obituary for my great Uncle, David Lee Fitzgerald.  Published in The Times in Valparaiso, Indiana on March 5, 2009.

DAVID L. FITZGERALD, PORTAGE, IN.  David L. Fitzgerald age 65 of Portage passed away Wednesday March 4, 2009.  He was born on September 22, 1943.  David worked at Main Street Body Repair in Griffith.  He was also a member of Grace Baptist Church, and the Sons of the American Legion #502, and loved to play horse shoes.  David is survived by his daughters: Candice and Barbara; brothers: Lewis (Joann) of Lima OH, Richard of Chesterton, Robert (Irene) of Portage, Delmar (Thelma) of Fruitland Park, FL, Charles “Larry” (Theresa) of South Haven, Thomas of Maine and Bryce (Maryann) of Indianapolis; sisters: Katherine Kimmerly [Kemmerly] of Crown Point and Florence Cole of Valparaiso; neices: Dawn (Felder) of IA and Cristal (Earl) Tapley of Portage; and many other nieces, nephews, family members and friends.  David was preceded in death by his parents: Voredell [Vondall] and Jennie Fitzgerald; and son, Richard Scott.  A visitation for David will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Friday March 6, 2009 at Rees Funeral Home – Brady Chapel, 3781 Central Ave., Lake Station.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday immediately after the visitation.  Burial will be at McCool Cemetery in Portage.  For further information please call Rees Funeral Home at (219) 962-1606 or online at: www.reesfuneralhome.com.

Shannon E. Roe, 31, Noblesville, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at home. She was born July 28, 1978 in Crown Point, Indiana.

Shannon was a 1996 graduate of Noblesville High School and a server at the Olive Garden Italian Restaraunt.

She is survived by sons, Chad Pharis & Jacob Giordano; mother & stepfather, Patricia & Bret Cole; sisters, Courtney Cole & Sara Cole; and grandparents, Vernon & Vivian Roe.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 25, 5:00 – 8:00PM at Randall & Roberts Funeral Home in Noblesville.

ROY FITZGERALD.  GRIFFITH, IN Roy Fitzgerald, age 61, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011 with his loving wife by his side. He is survived by his wife, Susanne (nee Reidelbach); children: Norman Mantel of MA, Kimberly Mantel of NH, Roy Fitzgerald Jr. of CA, Marc (Kristen) Mantel of MA and Ralph (Mia) Fitzgerald of CA; eight grandchildren; several brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews. Roy was employed by Arcelor Mittal Steel, and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be truly missed by all whose lives he touched. Friends are invited to meet with the family for a celebration of his life on his birthday, March 2, 2011 4:00 PM at the Griffith Baptist Church, 826 Harvey Street Griffith, IN 46319 with Pastor Rob Lemon officiating. Obituary for my great-grandmother Agnes Berniece Cole published in the Vidette-Messenger of Valparaiso, Indiana on October 13, 1991.

VALPARAISO – Agnes B. “Mom” Cole, 80, of Valparaiso, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 1991 at home.
She was born Aug. 23, 1911 in Vaplaraiso, the daughter of Charles and Ida (Weddle) Barkley.
She was the owner of three Mom Cole’s Kitchens, which included Mom Cole’s Truck Stop on state Route 2 and U. S. 30 in Valparaiso, for 23 years.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Valparaiso and the Elizabeth Circle.  She was the chairperson of the United Way in 1960 and was a former member of the Women of the Moose.
On Feb. 25, 1928, in Valparaiso, she married Lyal Newton Cole, who preceded her in death in 1955.
Surviving are four sons, Duane of South Haven, Zane of Valparaiso, Blaine of Tennessee and Wayne of Illinois; five daughters, Lorraine Berg and Elaine Snider, both of Valparaiso; Darlaine Lorz of Hobart, Marlaine Gordon of Crown Point and Arlaine Jacobs of Iowa; a brother, Milton Barkley of Ohio; a sister, Ruth Piper of Knox; 35 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, Laine “Flip” Cole and a daughter, Charlaine Cole.
Services are 11 a. m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church; the Rev. Robert Stine officiating; burial at Kimball Cemetery in Liberty Township; visitation 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Bartholomew Funeral Home, Valparaiso; memorials to the family.

Obituary for my great-great-grandfather, John Charles Barkley published in the Vidette-Messenger in Valparaiso, Indiana on October 3, 1964.

Charles Barkley, 80, 7 Pine, died Friday in Porter Memorial hospital after an extended illness.
Born Aug 2, 1884 in Kingman, Kan., he was the son of John and Isabel (Moffitt) Barkley.  He married Eda [Ida] E. Weddle who preceded him in death in 1928.  He later married Maude Collins who also preceded him in death.
A retired contractor, Barkley was a resident of Valparaiso most of his life.  He was a member of the Baptist church.
Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Milton E. Barkley, Russiaville, Ind. and Harold, Valparaiso; two daughters, Mrs. Agnes Cole and Mrs. Vern (Ruth) Piper, both of Valparaiso; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two brothers, R. Jett Barkley, Seattle and Richard Barkley, residing in Florida and one sister, Bertha.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Allen and Ralph; one daughter, Mrs. Thelma Jankowski, and one brother and one sister.
Services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday in the Bartholomew Funeral home with the Rev. John White, Calvary Baptist church, officiating.  Burial will be in Kimball cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p. m. today.

Obituary for my great-grandfather, Lyal Newton Cole.  Published in the Vidette-Messenger newspaper in Valparaiso, Indiana on August 8, 1955.

DEATHS

LYAL N. COLE
Lyal N. (Newt) Cole, 46, of 551 Factory, died at 3:15 p. m., Sunday in Porter Memorial hospital.  He had been ill several months, suffering from a heart condition.
A native of Porter county, he was born June 21, 1909, the son of Newton and Minnie (Sheets) Cole.  He married Agnes Barkley Feb. 23, 1929.  His father and widow are among the survivors.
A prominent member of the Valparaiso Loyal Order of Moose, he was employed, before his illness, in the McGill Manufacturing company bearing division.  He was custodian of the Billy club, 76 Lincolnway.
Surviving are his widow, his father; five sons, Duane of Grand Rapids, Mich., Wayne, now serving with the armed forces in Germany, Blaine, Laine and Zane of Valparaiso; five daughters, Mrs. Eugene Berg, Mrs. Olen Collins, Elaine, Marlaine and Arlaine; three sisters and three brothers, all of Valparaiso.  His mother and three brothers preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 1 p. m. Wednesday in LePell Funeral home.  The Rev. L. F. Myers, First Church of the Nazarene, will officiate, and burial will be in Kimball cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p. m. Tuesday until services.
